Do I Really Need a Professional Headshot for LinkedIn?

A professional portrait doesn't create credibility. It reflects the credibility you've already earned.

First Impressions Are Earned Long Before the Interview

The honest answer is no. You can have an outstanding career, years of experience and impressive achievements without ever hiring a professional photographer.

But the more useful question is this: does your LinkedIn profile create the same first impression as the reputation you have spent years building? Before anyone reads your experience, recommendations or achievements, they have already seen your photograph.

A professional LinkedIn headshot does not create credibility. It simply helps your portrait reflect the credibility you have already earned.

Why Your LinkedIn Profile Picture Matters

People often say that their experience matters far more than their profile picture. They are right. Experience, judgement and professional ability are what ultimately earn trust.

But human beings are visual. Before someone reads your headline, job title or career history, they have already formed an impression from your portrait. That impression happens quickly, often before the person has consciously thought about it.

The goal is not to look more important than you are. It is to make sure your visual presence matches the level of professionalism you have already reached.

Can I Just Use a Photo Taken on My Phone?

Of course you can. For some people, a natural phone photo is exactly the right choice. If your personal brand is intentionally informal, relaxed and highly approachable, an unpolished image may communicate that successfully.

But if you want your portrait to communicate authority, experience and an established professional presence, a carefully created headshot serves a different purpose. It shows that you take care of your image in the same way you take care of your wider reputation.

There is nothing wrong with a casual photograph. It simply communicates something different. The right choice depends on how you want to be perceived and whether your current image supports the next stage of your career.

The Face Should Always Be the Hero

Many people assume the difference between a professional headshot and an ordinary photograph is the camera. In reality, the camera is probably the least important part.

After photographing professionals from many industries and nationalities, I have found that the strongest portraits all follow one simple principle: the face should always be the hero of the image.

Lighting, clothing, colours and composition should all support the face rather than compete with it. The eyes should create direct contact with the viewer. If attention is pulled towards a bright background, a patterned jacket or another visual distraction before the face, the portrait is not doing its job.

You Do Not Have to Be Photogenic

Some people arrive confident but awkward in front of the camera. Others are naturally photogenic but struggle to show real presence. In my experience, both can leave with equally strong portraits.

The important part is not whether someone is naturally comfortable in front of a lens. It is how they are guided. One person may need clear direction, while another may need reassurance, conversation or simply more time.

That is why I spend between thirty minutes and one hour with each person. At the beginning of almost every session, there is a small wall between the photographer and the subject. The strongest portraits usually appear towards the end, once that wall has disappeared and we are simply two people having a conversation.

Every Person Needs a Different Approach

One thing that surprised me over the years was reading my Google reviews. Many clients describe me as gentle, patient and someone who makes them feel comfortable. That was never something I consciously tried to achieve. It’s simply how I work.

Rather than simply telling people what to do, I prefer to guide them. Throughout the session I regularly stop and show the portraits on the back of the camera so they can see what we’re creating together. That visual feedback helps people relax and naturally refine their expression until the portrait genuinely feels like them.

Who Usually Invests in a Professional LinkedIn Portrait?

Over the years I’ve noticed a common mindset among many of my clients. They aren’t necessarily the most senior people in the room. They are the people who understand that their personal brand is part of their professional reputation.

Many come to me while preparing for the next chapter of their career. Some are stepping into leadership positions. Others are changing industries, launching businesses or updating their professional image after many years. These conversations are often personal, so I never share individual stories. I believe trust and discretion are part of being a professional portrait photographer.

What About AI-Generated Headshots?

A few years ago, many people predicted that AI would replace professional headshots. I remember hearing those conversations myself. Yet several years later, people continue coming to my studio because authenticity still matters.

AI can generate pixels, but it cannot recreate the authenticity that comes from a real interaction between photographer and subject. Even when an AI portrait looks convincing, the person usually knows it isn’t really them. A portrait should feel truthful because authenticity builds trust.

So, Do You Really Need a Professional Headshot for LinkedIn?

Not everyone does. Your knowledge, experience and character will always matter more than your photograph.

But if your LinkedIn profile introduces you to employers, clients, investors or business partners before you’ve had the chance to meet them, your portrait becomes part of your professional reputation. You’re not investing in a photograph alone. You’re investing in authority, presence and a timeless asset that can represent you professionally for years.

A Final Thought

There’s a reason Rembrandt is still regarded as one of history’s greatest portrait painters. Human nature hasn’t changed. Long before someone reads our words, they look at our face. A well-crafted portrait communicates character, confidence and presence in a way words alone never can.

A professional LinkedIn headshot follows those same timeless principles. It doesn’t change who you are. It simply allows people to see the person you’ve spent years becoming.
