A good LinkedIn headshot should do far more than show what you look like. It should give people a sense of who you are before you’ve exchanged a single word. Long before someone reads your experience, recommendations or achievements, they’ve already formed an impression from your photograph.
The strongest LinkedIn portraits feel as though you’re already meeting the person. They communicate professionalism, trustworthiness and quiet authority without looking forced or overly polished.
One of the biggest mistakes I see is allowing everything except the person to become the focus. Busy backgrounds, distracting clothing, dramatic editing or exaggerated poses all compete for attention.
A good headshot is surprisingly simple. Your face should always be the hero of the image. Every decision, from lighting to composition, should naturally draw attention towards your eyes and expression.
People sometimes ask how to look more successful in a LinkedIn portrait.
I don’t believe that’s the right question.
A great headshot doesn’t invent authority. It reveals the professionalism, character and confidence that’s already there. My role isn’t to change someone. It’s to present them at their very best.
People instinctively trust authenticity far more than perfection.
One belief shapes every portrait session I photograph.
For a timeless portrait, you need time.
Almost everyone feels slightly uncomfortable in front of a camera at first. That’s completely natural. As we talk, laugh and work together, that initial barrier gradually disappears.
The session becomes a collaboration rather than a one-way process. I regularly show clients the photographs on the back of the camera, explain what I’m seeing and guide them gently instead of simply telling them how to pose.
That’s usually when the strongest portraits appear.
I photograph using principles inspired by Rembrandt lighting because it has remained timeless for centuries.
It creates natural depth, gently shapes the face and draws attention to the person’s expression rather than distracting from it. Combined with relaxed eye contact and thoughtful composition, it creates portraits that feel refined without looking artificial.
Ultimately, a good LinkedIn headshot isn’t about looking perfect.
It’s about helping people feel they’re already meeting the real you. When your portrait reflects your professionalism, character and quiet confidence, it becomes much more than a profile picture.
It becomes part of your professional reputation.
