Best Lighting for LinkedIn Headshots: Indoor vs. Outdoor

Choosing between an indoor or outdoor LinkedIn headshot isn't simply a matter of location. It's about deciding what you want your portrait to communicate about you before anyone reads your profile.

Why I Choose Indoor Window Light for Every LinkedIn Headshot

Professionals looking for LinkedIn headshots in Dubai often ask whether an indoor or outdoor setting produces the best result. The truth is that both approaches can produce beautiful photographs. The better question is: what impression do you want your portrait to leave?

For my work, the answer has never changed. Every professional portrait I create is photographed indoors using carefully controlled natural window light. It is a deliberate artistic choice inspired by centuries of portrait painting rather than modern photography trends.

Why I Always Choose Indoor Natural Light

My approach is deeply influenced by the work of the Old Masters, particularly Rembrandt, whose use of window light I have studied extensively. Long before photography existed, painters understood how natural light could reveal not just a person’s appearance, but their character.

That philosophy continues to guide every portrait I create today. Soft window light produces gentle transitions across the face, creating depth without appearing dramatic or artificial. It feels authentic because it is authentic. It is the type of light our eyes have naturally recognised for thousands of years.

The Face Should Always Be the Hero

One of my strongest beliefs is that a professional headshot should never compete with its surroundings. The most important part of the photograph is the person.

Outdoor locations often introduce visual distractions. Buildings, greenery, traffic, people and changing backgrounds all compete for attention. Even when they are beautifully blurred, they still become part of the story.

In my portraits, I want the opposite. A simple painterly background allows your expression to become the focal point. Your face becomes the hero of the image, which is exactly where attention should be when someone visits your LinkedIn profile.

Consistency Matters More Than Chance

Outdoor photography certainly has its strengths. It uses natural light, which already gives it a more authentic feel than heavily lit studio photography.

However, it also introduces variables that cannot always be controlled. Weather changes. Sunlight moves. Temperatures become uncomfortable. Locations become crowded. Even the mood of the session changes when you’re surrounded by distractions.

I photograph at a carefully chosen time of day when the window light is at its best. This allows me to produce consistent results session after session instead of relying on circumstances that constantly change.

Great Expressions Come From Great Environments

Lighting is only one part of a successful headshot. The environment has a huge influence on how people feel in front of the camera.

My studio is intentionally quiet and uncluttered. Gentle background music, a calm atmosphere and genuine conversation help people relax. As trust builds, authentic expressions begin to appear naturally.

That level of comfort is much harder to achieve in a busy public space where people are walking past, traffic is nearby or the location simply feels unfamiliar.

Why I Don’t Offer Outdoor LinkedIn Headshots

People occasionally ask whether I can photograph them outdoors.

I politely decline.

My portfolio represents a consistent artistic style that clients specifically come to me for. I believe specialising allows me to produce stronger work than trying to offer every possible style. Outdoor portraits certainly have their place, but they are not the portraits I have dedicated my career to creating.

Many of my clients notice this immediately. Even when viewing the unedited photographs on the camera, one comment comes up again and again:

“It looks like a painting.”

For me, there is no greater compliment because that is precisely the feeling I strive to achieve.

So Which Lighting Is Best?

The answer ultimately depends on the style you’re looking for.

If your goal is a portrait that feels contemporary and location-driven, an outdoor session may suit you.

If, however, you want a LinkedIn headshot that communicates authority, approachability and timeless professionalism, soft natural window light remains, in my opinion, the finest choice. There is a reason portraits created using this approach continue to attract people to museums and galleries centuries after they were painted. Great light never goes out of style.
