Here’s a secret: A good portrait photo isn’t just about a good subject. It’s also about the photographer and about their ability to capture a moment that feels natural, relaxed and captivating.

Let’s break i down:

1 – Eye contact

If your subject is not looking directly at the camera, it can feel like they’re looking past you, which can make for an awkward photo. Looking at the camera lens creates a sense of captivating engagement.

2 – Natural expression

They should look like themselves—not like they’re posing for a portrait photo or trying to look perfect (which is impossible).

If you have trouble capturing this kind of expression on your own subject, try setting up a mirror where they can see themselves while they’re being photographed. This will give them something to focus on. And will help them relax into their own face instead of focusing too much on the camera lens.

3 – Plain clothing

Sometimes clothes with patterns or colors can be distracting from your subject. Plain clothing allows your subject’s features to stand out in the portrait photo without being distracted by busy patterns or bright colors on their clothing. If you’re shooting during the day, consider using a grey background.

4 – One directional light source

Having one light source will help create shadows on different parts of their face and body. And this can make them look more realistic than if there were multiple lights hitting them at once.

An overhead light source can give your photos an interesting painterly quality that makes them stand out from others on social media.
