Choosing the right outfit is one of the most important decisions you’ll make before your LinkedIn headshot session. Your clothing should reflect your professionalism while still feeling timeless and approachable. The goal is to create a portrait that keeps the focus where it belongs, on you.
Solid colours almost always produce the strongest LinkedIn portraits. Unlike busy prints or bold patterns, they keep the attention where it matters most, on your face. Navy, charcoal, olive and other muted tones photograph beautifully and suit a wide range of professions. Bright white garments can also work well, particularly beneath a blazer, but large areas of pure white may reflect light and become distracting.
Fit is just as important as colour. Well-fitted clothing creates a polished appearance, while garments that are too loose or too tight can distract from your expression. A tailored shirt, structured blazer or clean neckline will almost always produce a more timeless portrait than following short-lived fashion trends. Your clothing should feel comfortable and allow you to move naturally during the session.
If possible, bring two or three outfit options to your session. Small changes, such as swapping a jacket, shirt or blouse, can create portraits with very different personalities while maintaining a consistent professional look. This gives you more variety for LinkedIn, your company website and other professional profiles without needing another photoshoot.
Freshly pressed clothing, neatly styled hair and simple accessories all contribute to a professional result. Avoid large logos or graphics that may distract from your face. If you wear glasses every day, it is usually best to wear them for your portrait as well. Most importantly, choose clothing that feels authentic to your role and the impression you want to create.
The right outfit won’t make the portrait on its own, but it gives you the strongest possible starting point. If you’re unsure what to wear, I’m always happy to offer guidance before your session.
